How to Master a Backside 360 Indy

ARTICLE BY: Daryl Marly

DRAMATICALLY improve your riding!

You’ll preferably want a kicker that is going to get you into the air for a reasonable period of time and with a bit of height. A nice wedge shaped jump of around 1m in height is never a bad way to start. More time spent in the air means you don’t have to concentrate so hard on spinning yourself round in time for the landing. That being said increased height also lends its self to increased risk of personal injury, so be sensible about your level of riding! Slow progression is generally the way forward.

After you have become used to sessioning a particular kicker you should approach it at a fair lick feeling confident. Ride up the transition either flat on your base, or slightly on your edge whilst changing your weight a little once you take off. Remember to get ready to take off by bending your knees, keeping your centre of weight low.

Upon leaving the tip of the jump commence your backside rotation. ‘Backside’ refers to rotations that involve moving your head and shoulders (the rest of the body follows) in a horizontal circular fashion towards jump you’ve just left, and onwards. Making your head looks over your rear shoulder is the best move to commence with.

Lift your knees up into your chest and place your rear hand on the edge of the board between your two sets of toes. For added style when more comfortable with this trick try extending your front leg a little, holding it in that position. When tweaking like this your rotation will tend to be slowed, and so will take a bit of getting used to.

Aim to hold this indy grab for as long as possible.

Having kept your head looking over your back shoulder you should start to see a landing spot materializing early on in the spin at around 90 degrees. At around 270 degrees it’s a good time to release the board and concentrate on looking at the landing. Being able to anticipate the landing is something that improves with practice. Rotations can be slowed by opening your position up more, e.g. extending your legs a little.

As your board touches down your slightly bent knees should allow your legs to absorb the landing, your body compression relating to the size of the fall you’ve just made. Having landed nice and flat on your board, all that remains to do is glide off smoothly, returning later to pull off an even bigger, more stylish version.
